Brake Cooling Performance

Brake Cooling Performance Testing

STAGE 1

Test Settings:

Wild Horse Pass road course Arizona, November 14th 2015.  Ambient temperature 85F.

Test vehicle: Big turbo Focus ST with custom Stratified tune, Wilwood 4 piston calipers and volvo S80 rotors. Car was lowered and had an aftermarket suspension setup. This car was the perfect choice for testing brake cooling, as it is to generate a lot of heat very quickly.

System post race analysis:

System showed good performance on recovery. This is evident by observing the slope of the temperature vs. time plots. A steeper slope (blue line) shows recovery from max temp taking place faster. Red line is base line run with no cooling.  Driver assured me that the feeling was mutual, what I was seeing in the plots was obvious to him as he complained when the system was blocked off.

driver response: “I felt I could push the brakes much harder with stage 1 cooling. I didn’t feel a need to let off after even an extended amount of time, for us drivers this is crucial. To remain confident in your brakes is everything. Stage 1 is really the go-to solution for the Focus ST. Recovery is fast, max temps are lower and your brakes will thank you”

STAGE 2

Test Settings:

Arizona Motorsports Park, October 10th 2015. Ambient temperature 100F.

Stage 2 showed significant heat extraction from the rotor assembly. The infrared data logging shows large gaps between a cooled and uncooled session. Well over 100F drops in temperature were recorded. Driver feedback was impressive.

Driver response: The mushy feeling was never evident. After the brakes warmed up, they remained cool enough to be pushed to the limit throughout the session. Blocking the system caused me to have to pit early to later request the system be un-blocked due to brake fade. As this is a safety concern.
